Mix and match colors on different parts until settling on a design that is uniquely yours and have it shipped right to your door. Although it has only eight body color choices and zero patterns, the Elite Core features additional options that the regular Xbox gamepad lacks. You can choose between a plus-shape or circular direction pad in one of 10 different metallic finishes, and individually change the color of your thumbstick caps and base rings (23 options). The face and menu buttons have several more color options than the standard controller's mostly monochrome choices.

Xbox and “X-Men ’97” have come together to bring you a very special Xbox Series X wrapped in a limited-edition comic inspired by the all-new series and created by Marvel writer Rich Douek and artist Paco Diaz. This thrilling 2-page story with full page cover is exclusive to the Xbox Series X, and features Cyclops leading the X-Men in a battle against Sentinels and Master Mold, with an Xbox Series X console making a special appearance in the Danger Room. Xbox Design Lab is an excellent addition to the Xbox ecosystem, and I hope it continues to improve moving forward with new options and greater availability. Regardless of what you create, it'll be truly "you," and it'll be able to follow you wherever you game, across Xbox, PC, and mobile devices. Budget-conscious consumers may be dissuaded by the swiftly rising price of an Xbox Design Lab controller, as well.

Pick Your Price, Design Your Device
Zachary Boddy (They / Them) is a Staff Writer for Windows Central, primarily focused on covering the latest news in tech and gaming, the best Xbox and PC games, and the most interesting Windows and Xbox hardware. They have been gaming and writing for most of their life starting with the original Xbox, and started out as a freelancer for Windows Central and its sister sites in 2019. Now a full-fledged Staff Writer, Zachary has expanded from only writing about all things Minecraft to covering practically everything on which Windows Central is an expert, especially when it comes to Microsoft. Built using what is widely considered as the best overall Xbox controller for the majority of gamers, Xbox Design Lab is simple and easy to recommend. If you don't understand the value in purely cosmetic expenses, however, you can easily pick up a more technically capable controller for a similar price to a fully specced Xbox Design Lab controller. On top of that, you likely won't be met with the same weeks-long wait time to actually receive your new controller.

There also aren't a ton of options for the face buttons, which come in either the default four-color scheme or various combinations of white and black. If you were hoping to, say, recreate the Super Nintendo's purple and pink buttons on your new Xbox pad, you're out of luck. Once you're done designing, you can add laser engraving at the bottom of the controller for an extra $10, for when you want to add something like your gamertag or the name of your favorite sports team (dirty words don't work — I tried). If you want to put your own spin on those controllers, you can spend a few extra dollars at the Xbox Design Lab. The online customization tool lets you outfit a gamepad with your favorite colors and an engraved name, which Microsoft then builds and ships to you. The Xbox Design Lab debuted during the Xbox One era, but it now offers the Xbox Wireless Controller included with the Xbox Series X/S and the Elite Core controller (with the option of purchasing the full set of Elite accessories).
